Opened in 2007, Guangxi Normal University, Yanshan Campus is the newest of GXNU’s three campuses. It’s a bit of a journey from Guilin, about a 40-minute drive south, situated halfway between the bustling city and the picturesque town of Yangshuo. Guangxi Normal University, Yanshan Campus is more than just a collection of modern buildings. It houses Guangxi’s largest library, a treasure trove of knowledge within a beautiful setting. While the other campuses have their own libraries, Yanshan Campus boasts this impressive resource. This makes it a hub for many domestic undergraduate students, who spend countless hours within its walls. Guangxi Normal University, Yanshan Campus wasn’t always here. The university itself has a rich history, dating back to 1932. It was originally founded in Guilin’s Yanshan district as Guangxi Provincial Teacher’s College, one of China’s first teacher training schools. Over the years, it experienced several name changes and even a temporary relocation to Nanning. It finally adopted its current name, Guangxi Normal University, in 1983. The term “Normal University” might seem unusual. It’s a historical term, once common in English, for institutions that trained teachers. Now, many comprehensive Chinese universities that started as teacher’s colleges retain “Normal” in their English names. This reflects their history while showcasing their evolution into modern research institutions. So, as you stand here, at Guangxi Normal University, Yanshan Campus, you’re on the grounds of a relatively new addition to a university with a long and fascinating past.
