Guangdong Union Theological Seminary. Does that name resonate with you? It should. Let me tell you why. The Guangdong Union Theological Seminary is more than just a theological school. It is a story of faith and resilience. It is a testament to the enduring spirit of Christianity in China.

The Guangdong Union Theological Seminary’s story began in 1914. It started as Canton Union Theological College. Eight mission societies and three denominational conventions joined hands. They sought to create a center for theological education. “Union” became the defining word. It represented their shared purpose.

Several groups later joined this union. These included The Baptist Convention of Guangdong and Guangxi Province. Also, the Lutheran Synod of Guangdong and Jiangxi Province. Basel Mission and Rhenish Church joined too. The college became part of Lingnan University. It was then known as “Union Theological College of Lingnan University”.

However, history took a turn. In 1960, the seminary closed. It remained so until 1986. Then it was re-established. It was renamed Guangdong Union Theological Seminary. This was to honor its past. It was also to show its commitment to serving Guangdong’s churches.

The Guangdong Union Theological Seminary started small. It was inside Guangzhou’s Dongshan Church. In 1994, it moved to Sha’mian. It occupied the former bishop’s house of the Anglican Church. Finally, in 2001, it found a permanent home. It settled in Dongping Village in Guangzhou’s Baiyun District. The campus covers 10,000 square meters.

Today, the Guangdong Union Theological Seminary has several buildings. There is a teaching building for learning. The library supports study. Student dormitories offer a place to live. A dining hall offers nourishment. “The Union Church” is open to all. A building for pastoral staff is being built. There are also indoor and outdoor sports areas.

Initially, it was a two-year college. The aim was quick training for preachers. Later, it became a three-year college. This was to train more qualified individuals. So far, the Guangdong Union Theological Seminary has produced many graduates. More than 700 have graduated. About 75% of Guangdong’s pastoral staff are graduates. Most serve in Guangdong. Some serve in Hainan and Guangxi.

In 2009, the seminary gained approval. It could run an undergraduate program. Despite this, it still maintains its three-year college program.

The library is a treasure. It holds over 30,000 books. The goal is to reach 50,000 soon.

The Guangdong Union Theological Seminary has a strong faculty. Fourteen full-time teachers guide students. Four have PhDs. Many teachers have studied abroad. Visiting teachers offer courses in diverse fields. These include languages, law, and philosophy.

The Guangdong Union Theological Seminary offers important courses. Students study the Bible. They learn theology. They explore church history. They study pastoral care. They also learn music.

Guangdong Union Theological Seminary stands as a beacon. It shines for theological education. It prepares leaders. They will guide the churches of tomorrow. Its history shows dedication. Its present shows growth. Its future holds promise.
