Was it a flower or a wave? The roof of the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center seems to be both. It’s a fascinating design. This enormous stadium right before us is officially known as the Guangdong Olympic Sports Centre Stadium. It’s the largest stadium in China, boasting over 80,000 seats. Built in 2001, it hosted the Ninth National Games of China that same year. Interestingly, the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center was initially intended to be part of the 2008 Summer Olympics bid. However, those Games eventually went to Beijing, leading to the construction of the iconic Bird’s Nest stadium. The American firm Ellerbe Becket designed this stadium. They drew inspiration from Guangzhou’s nickname, “The Flower City”. The petal-like roof is meant to evoke layers of flower petals, while also mimicking the flow of a wave. This striking design is visible from quite a distance, especially at night. The multicolored seats within the stadium also contribute to the overall aesthetic, arranged in sections connected by a ribbon pattern. Over the years, the Guangdong Olympic Sports Center has witnessed some exciting sporting events. In 2007, it hosted a match between Guangzhou Pharmaceutical F.C. and Manchester United. Again, in 2008, it welcomed Chelsea F.C. for their first-ever game in China. The stadium also played a significant role in the 2010 Asian Games and Asian Para Games. It hosted the track and field events and the opening and closing ceremonies of the Para Games. Did you know that this very ground was once the site of Huangcun Airport, built by Japanese forces during World War II? It’s a remarkable transformation from a wartime airfield to a symbol of athletic achievement.
