Guadalcanal is the largest island in the Solomon Islands. It spans 5,302 square kilometers. This island’s history stretches back millennia. Archaeological finds at Poha Cave and Vatuluma Posovi show settlements dating from 4500 to 2500 BC. Austronesian Lapita people settled here around 1200-800 BC.

In 1568, a Spanish expedition led by Álvaro de Mendaña de Neira first charted Guadalcanal. Pedro de Ortega Valencia, a member of the expedition, named it after his hometown in Andalusia, Spain. Over time, the island’s name evolved through various pronunciations. These included Guadarcana and Guadalcanar.

Fast forward to World War II. Guadalcanal became a critical battleground. In 1942 and 1943, Japanese and U.S. troops fought fiercely here. The Guadalcanal campaign marked a major turning point in the Pacific theater. The Americans ultimately won, halting Japanese expansion. The nearby waters earned the somber title of Ironbottom Sound. This was due to the many ships sunk during naval engagements.

After the war, Honiara became the capital. It replaced Tulagi. Henderson Field, initially built by the Japanese, transformed into the Solomon Islands’ international airport.

But Guadalcanal’s story doesn’t end with WWII. In 1999, tensions flared between the local Guale people and migrants from Malaita. This led to violence and intervention by international forces.

Guadalcanal also boasts natural wonders. Mount Popomanaseu is the highest point in the Solomon Islands. It rises 2,335 meters above sea level. The Mbokokimbo River stretches 98.7 kilometers. It is the island’s longest river. The island also has diverse wildlife. Colorful parrots, estuarine crocodiles, and the native phalanger call Guadalcanal home.

Today, Guadalcanal hosts the Vilu War Museum. It displays remains of military equipment and memorials to fallen soldiers. It serves as a reminder of the island’s turbulent past.
