What a peculiar creature greets us here. This is the Grüngürteltier the mascot of Frankfurt’s Grüngürtel.
The Grüngürteltier isn’t your average animal. It’s a whimsical invention a playful blend of wild boar badger and starling. This unique design was the brainchild of Robert Gernhardt a renowned Frankfurt artist and writer. He conceived it in 2001. Gernhardt’s vision was to create a charming symbol for Frankfurt’s Green Belt a vital urban green space.
Gernhardt envisioned the Grüngürteltier as a cross between a wild boar a newt and a starling. He even gave it a fictional Latin name Dasipus franconia a nod to the armadillo family. The Grüngürteltier is always depicted in green. This reflects the vibrant greenery of the Grüngürtel itself.
Gernhardt’s initial sketch was followed by four more. Together they form the ‘GrünGürtel-Tier Suite’. These drawings were gifted to Frankfurt’s Environmental Office. They were meant to promote environmental awareness. In return Gernhardt received a group of ash trees now known as the Gernhardt-Ash Trees. These trees are located where Gernhardt claimed to have first sighted the creature.
Since its creation the Grüngürteltier has become a beloved emblem. It appears on city brochures websites and even as a limited-edition Steiff stuffed animal. Children can even earn a Grüngürteltier diploma by completing a special activity pass.
