Ever wondered where Essen breathes? This is it. Right here is the Grüne Lunge. The name “Grüne Lunge” translates to “Green Lung”. It is a common term in Germany for inner-city green spaces. These spaces provide recreational value for city dwellers. The name suggests it is like the city’s organ for breathing.

Urban green spaces like the Grüne Lunge are important for recreation. They can bind dust and positively influence temperatures. Think of the Central Park in New York City. Consider also Hyde Park in London. Or the Englische Garten in Munich. These are all examples of “Grüne Lunge” areas.

Essen’s industrial past makes the Grüne Lunge especially vital. The decline of coal mining and steel production had a huge impact. The closing of coke plants in the fifties brought economic crisis. The people suffered from it. But there was also an upside. For decades, Essen was blanketed in pollution. Countless tons of particulate matter filled the air. The sun was a rare sight. Residents faced significant health risks. Their life expectancy was lower than elsewhere.

Today, Essen’s skies are blue again. Former industrial sites have been transformed. Some became cultural monuments. Others became new commercial spaces. Some areas became local recreation areas. The old Krupp steel mill in western Essen is such a place.

The Krupp family played a big role in Essen’s history. After World War II, they made Villa Hügel available to the public. Since then, it has hosted concerts and international exhibitions. Villa Hügel can be visited. Tours explain the rise and fall of the Krupp empire.

When you are in the Grüne Lunge you have the possibility for grilling. But there are some rules. Grilling is only allowed in marked zones between 10 AM and 9 PM. Grilling outside these zones can result in a fine of 150 Euro. You must bring your own grill and accessories. This includes charcoal and lighters. Accelerants like methylated spirits are prohibited.

Use a grill with sufficient distance to the grass. Ground-level grills and campfires are forbidden. Do not grill under trees. Sparks can ignite branches and foliage. Be considerate of others and nature. Ball games are prohibited in grill zones for safety. They are allowed in other park areas.

After grilling, dispose of ashes, food scraps and packaging properly. Use the provided waste disposal options. Special ash containers are available. Leaving grilling waste behind results in a fine. It can cost you 100 Euro or more. If in doubt, dispose of waste at home. Consider using reusable tableware and containers.

The Grüne Lunge is more than just a park. It is a symbol of Essen’s transformation. From industrial heartland to green metropolis. Enjoy the fresh air. Appreciate the history. This green space embodies Essen’s resilience and rebirth.
