Question: What if these walls could talk about the Grundschule Marienwerder? This isn’t just any school. It’s a piece of Hannover’s history. The Grundschule Marienwerder was built between 1963 and 1965. It was originally a Volksschule. Professor Stefan Schwerdtfeger designed it.

The Grundschule Marienwerder is now a protected monument since 2008. The building showcases architecture and art history. It also holds artistic, scientific, and urban development significance. The school’s design includes slate cladding on the outer walls. Inside, you’ll find terrazzo floors. Also, there is masonry and ceilings made of dark spruce.

The heart of the Grundschule Marienwerder is its entrance hall. This hall includes a music room and stage. Classrooms extend from this central area. Single and double-story classroom wings stretch eastward. Westward, the building initially features single-story structures. A three-story section was added later. It houses classrooms and kindergarten rooms.

Egon Neubauer, a Hannover artist, contributed to the building’s design. His artwork decorates the school’s rear wall. It depicts abstract forms from a farming village. You can spot stylized windmills and farm buildings.

About 100 students attend the Grundschule Marienwerder. It is known as the smallest elementary school in Hannover. In 2017 students from ten nations were learning here. The school became an open all-day school in 2012/2013.

The SV Marienwerder sports club also uses the school’s grounds. They have a clubhouse. They also use the gym for activities. In 2011, there were plans to renovate the gym’s restrooms. The Grundschule Marienwerder stands as a testament to Hannover’s commitment to education. It combines history, art, and community.
