Perhaps you’ve noticed the diverse faces entering Grundschule im Kleefelde each morning? This isn’t just a school. It’s a microcosm of the world.
Grundschule im Kleefelde stands proudly on Schweriner Platz. Its story began long ago. The school’s roots trace back to 1857. Back then, Kleefeld was just becoming part of Hannover.
Imagine children gathering in a simple parochial school. That early school was a Pfarrschule. The first location was at Dohmeyers Weg 27. In 1860, it was known as “Schule im Stadtbezirk Kleefeld”.
A single teacher, Ernst Hefke, taught 80 boys and 70 girls. He covered Bible study, catechism, hymns, reading, writing and arithmetic.
The school evolved over the decades. A new school building opened on Dohmeyersweg on April 30, 1886. It had eight classrooms, a teacher’s room, and a school warden’s apartment.
Later, in 1903, the old outhouses finally connected to the sewer system. A significant milestone for hygiene.
The school continued to grow. On November 9, 1922, a new building opened at Schweriner Platz. This is where Grundschule im Kleefelde stands today.
Coal shortages plagued the school initially. Only some classrooms could be heated. Strict rules controlled classroom ventilation. The city suggested creating a school garden.
The school faced tough times. In 1923, 135 children in Hannover couldn’t attend school due to hunger.
During the mid-20th century, the school split. In 1947, Volksschule 31 became a girls’ school at Schweriner Platz. Volksschule 65 became a boys’ school. It was located at Hölderlinstraße 6.
Grundschule im Kleefelde has had many names. It was once Bürgerschule 31 and Volksschule 65. It was also known as Hinrich-Kopf-Schule.
Since August 1, 1970, it has focused on grades 1 through 4. It became a Grundschule, a primary school. Since 2011, it’s been an open all-day primary school.
Today, Grundschule im Kleefelde embraces diversity. Around 340 students attend in 16 classes. Families come from over 40 countries.
The school actively promotes peace. In 2022, students and parents raised 6,000 euros for the Ukrainian community in Hannover. They sold cards and muffins.
The school works with the Nina Dieckmann Foundation. This foundation helps children who are new to German.
The school uses its location near the Eilenriede forest. It emphasizes ecological awareness.
With 24 teachers, two social workers and many more staff members, the Grundschule im Kleefelde is a vibrant place.
Grundschule im Kleefelde is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a place where children learn and grow. It’s a symbol of community. It is a place where everyone is welcome.
