Grundschule Ebersdorf has a rich history. Its story began in 1841. A small schoolhouse opened on Mittweidaer Straße. It served the community until 1878. The school needed more space. A new building was planned. Construction started in 1877.

In 1878, the Grundschule Ebersdorf opened on Lichtenauer Straße. By 1900, 640 students attended. Only seven teachers taught them. A new school building became necessary. Construction began in 1906. It was built directly across from the old one at Lichtenauer Straße 45.

In 1907, both buildings were used for classes. A gymnasium was added to the new school in 1926. In 1984, the school was renamed Max-Saupe-Oberschule. After the political changes in 1992, it became a primary school again.

The old school building closed in 1993. All classes moved to the newer building. Around 2010, the old building was renovated. It became a residential building. Grundschule Ebersdorf is located on Chemnitz’s rural edge. It is known as the “Schule im Grünen” or school in the countryside. Both school buildings and the gymnasium are listed as cultural monuments.

Today, Grundschule Ebersdorf continues to thrive. It is known for its naturnahe Umgebung or natural surroundings. The school emphasizes learning in nature. Students spend time outdoors. They learn about their environment. This approach makes learning fun.
