Seven hundred and fifty-eight students. That’s a lot of laughter echoing through these halls. This is the Grundschule am Sandsteinweg. It’s not just any school. It’s a vibrant community. It’s a place where history breathes.
The Grundschule am Sandsteinweg opened its doors on October 7 1957. Initially called the Christoph-Ruden-Schule it was a small school. It was connected to the old Buckow village school. In 1967 it officially became the Grundschule am Sandsteinweg. Growing student numbers led to the construction of a second school building in 1968. A second gym followed in 1972. By 1995 two more buildings joined the complex. These two-story buildings now house this large community.
But the story of the Grundschule am Sandsteinweg is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a story of animals and students. It’s a story of learning and growing together. In 1975 the school started a unique project. It involved raising fish frogs and newts in aquariums. Students cared for these animals. The project expanded over the years.
In 1989 principal Petra Balzer developed the concept “School as a Living Space”. A chicken coop and a rabbit hutch were built in 1990. This marked the beginning of the school zoo. By 1992 donkeys goats sheep ducks pigeons and ponies lived on the school grounds. This unusual zoo attracted media attention. The Berliner Zeitung RBB and Berliner Abendblatt all reported on this unique project. The school’s parent-teacher association actively supports the zoo. They manage the ongoing costs of caring for the animals. Volunteers from among the parents and educators help as well.
The school zoo isn’t just for fun. It’s also a valuable learning tool. It teaches students responsibility and respect for animals. The school zoo helped to reduce violence and vandalism. It’s a testament to the school’s commitment to creating a positive learning environment. This is a testament to community. The zoo which now boasts over 100 animals including five horses has made the Grundschule am Sandsteinweg nationally famous. Students can even take riding lessons and exams on the school’s own riding ground.
The Grundschule am Sandsteinweg also features a school circus Sandolino. Students learn artistic skills in several circus groups. They perform at “jester festivals” in the school’s circus tent. The school is deeply involved in the local Buckow community. They participate in the Christmas market. They design programs for children and maintain close contact with several senior citizens’ homes. The Grundschule am Sandsteinweg isn’t just a school. It’s a vibrant community hub.
