What secrets does steel hold? Here at the Growing Home Installation, the answer unfolds. This striking artwork by Joe O’Connell and Creative Machines isn’t just steel; it’s a narrative. Growing Home whispers the story of San Diego, etched onto its bands. The installation’s unique design mirrors the growth of a marine mollusk. Each layer of shell represents a chapter in its life, just as the steel bands of Growing Home capture different eras of San Diego’s history. Starting at the top, the bands depict the region’s ancient past, gradually moving down to more recent events. It’s like reading a history book from top to bottom, a timeline crafted in steel. The text itself tells the tale, revealing fragments of San Diego’s past. While the artwork’s description mentions the oldest prehistory at the top, the specific details of those stories remain a mystery for us to unravel. The Growing Home Installation stands as more than just art; it’s a testament to San Diego’s ever-evolving story. It reminds us that history isn’t static; it grows and changes, just like the city itself.
