Picture the scene: a lush valley descends gently towards the sea. This is Groudle Glen a haven of natural beauty and historical intrigue on the Isle of Man.

Groudle Glen wasn’t always the tranquil retreat it is today. In 1893 entrepreneur Richard Maltby Broadbent transformed this remote hamlet into a Victorian tourist paradise. He cleverly used the glen’s natural beauty. He added many attractions to boost its appeal. He called it “The Fern Land Of Mona”.

Broadbent’s vision included a zoo. Imagine polar bears and sea lions thriving in a small cove. This incredible feat of engineering is still evident today. The zoo necessitated a narrow-gauge railway. The Groudle Glen Railway opened in 1896 transporting visitors to “Sea Lion Rocks”. The railway remains a key attraction.

The glen boasted more than just animals. There were bowling greens croquet lawns a mill and even a dance floor. A water wheel named “Little Isabella” after the famous Laxey Wheel still turns slowly. The ruins of a refreshment kiosk stand near the old bandstand. Mona May Cannell a local woman ran the kiosk. She commuted daily from Laxey via the tram.

Sadly after World War II Groudle Glen’s popularity declined. Most attractions disappeared. The railway however survived. Volunteers restored it. Today the railway operates during summer months. A visitor centre and tea rooms stand near the old zoo site.

The “Lhen Coan” or “Lonely Valley” canyon is another highlight. Lily ponds once graced the lower glen but they’re now less accessible. In 2020 the “Little Isabella” waterwheel was restored to working order.

Groudle Glen’s history is rich and varied. From its Victorian heyday to its peaceful present. It remains a special place on the Isle of Man. Take a stroll down its paths. Discover its hidden corners and feel the whispers of its past.
