The rhythmic splash of water against the wheel’s wooden spokes. That is the sound of Groudle Glen Water Wheel. This isn’t just any water wheel. It’s a piece of Manx history. Built in 1893 it once powered a nearby hotel. That hotel is long gone. The wheel however remains. It’s a testament to Victorian ingenuity. A miniature marvel nestled within Groudle Glen. A glen originally called “The Fern Land Of Mona”.

Richard Maltby Broadbent. That’s the name you should remember. This visionary developer transformed Groudle Glen into a Victorian tourist paradise. He planted thousands of trees creating beautiful walks. He also built a zoo. Imagine. Sea lions polar bears even brown bear cubs. All here in Groudle Glen! The Groudle Glen Railway was another one of Broadbent’s ideas. A miniature train that snaked its way through the glen. It took visitors to the zoo. The zoo itself was a remarkable feat of engineering. Damming a cove to create a habitat for these exotic animals.

The Groudle Glen Water Wheel is more than just a functional machine. It represents a bygone era. An era of grand plans and ambitious visions. The wheel served a purpose. Supplying water to the hotel. It was also a central element of the glen’s charm. Part of the many attractions for Victorian visitors. A water wheel became a symbol of Groudle Glen.

The Little Isabella. That’s another name for this iconic water wheel. A nod to the famous Laxey Wheel. A larger and more famous wheel a short distance away. The Little Isabella though has its own unique story. It’s a smaller version yet just as captivating.

Sadly Groudle Glen’s popularity waned after World War II. The railway closed. The zoo disappeared. Most attractions faded into memory. The water wheel though endured. A silent witness to the glen’s rise and fall.

In 2020 however the Little Isabella got a new lease of life. Mining engineering firm MMD restored it. They brought it back to working order. A tribute to the glen’s history and the skill of Manx engineers.

So stand here. Gaze upon the Groudle Glen Water Wheel. Hear the water flowing. Feel the history whispering. This is more than just a water wheel. It is a living story. A story of vision ambition and enduring legacy. It is a reminder of Groudle Glen’s past and a testament to its enduring spirit. A must see for all visitors to the Isle of Man.
