Around 10000 BC humans lived here. This is the Grotto Addura. A fascinating place.

The Grotto Addura is a complex of three natural grottoes. They sit on Mount Pellegrino overlooking Palermo. These aren’t just any caves. They hold a unique piece of history.

Imagine the scene. Paleolithic hunters lived here. They used the caves for shelter. They left behind bones and hunting tools. These are now in Palermo’s Regional Archaeological Museum. The real treasure? Extraordinary rock engravings. They decorate the walls. This makes the Grotto Addura exceptional. It’s a unique case in prehistoric cave art. The name Addaura? It comes from Arabic meaning ‘the circuit’.

The discovery of these engravings was accidental. After the Allied invasion in 1943 the Allies stored munitions here. A post-war explosion damaged the grotto walls. This revealed the engravings hidden for ages. Archaeologist Jole Bovio Marconi studied them. Her work was published in 1953. The engravings depict humans and animals. A central scene shows a group of figures. They surround two central figures. These have covered heads and arched backs. Interpretations vary. Some see acrobats. Others suggest a ritual sacrifice. Ropes around the necks support the sacrifice theory. This is a very unique example of Paleolithic art. The attention to the scenery is remarkable. The human figures are particularly interesting. Their style is new and different from other finds.

Sadly the Grotto Addura is closed to the public. The risk of falling rocks is too high. The site is also suffering from vandalism.

So here we stand. Outside this extraordinary place. A silent testament to a distant past. The Grotto Addura’s story lives on.
