“Pray for us sinners”. Do those words resonate as deeply with you as they do with the countless souls who visit this Grotta della Madonna di Lourdes? This is not Lourdes in France. This is Milan’s own Grotta della Madonna di Lourdes a sanctuary of faith and hope. It stands as a testament to the power of devotion and the enduring appeal of the Virgin Mary.
The Grotta della Madonna di Lourdes is more than just a replica. It is a place where the faithful find solace and connection. Many consider this Grotta a second home.
Let’s step back in time to the late 19th century. Two priest brothers Antonio and Giuseppe Videmari spearheaded this sacred project. They wanted to express gratitude for Giuseppe’s miraculous recovery from a severe illness. Inspired by the original grotto in Lourdes, they envisioned a similar sanctuary in Milan.
In 1893 the Videmari brothers purchased land in what was then the outskirts of Milan. The area was known as Borgo degli Ortolani a village of gardeners. Construction of the Grotta began in 1894. Engineer Spirito Maria Chiappetta designed it. In 1897 the construction of the church commenced.
The community rallied behind the Videmari brothers. Locals bought bricks for 10 centesimi each. They often sacrificed their own needs to support the construction. Even Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini who later became Pope Paul VI contributed by buying bricks.
Despite facing numerous challenges the community persevered. The landscape the canals and the costs all seemed insurmountable. Yet with faith in the Virgin Mary they overcame every obstacle.
The Grotta della Madonna di Lourdes was finally inaugurated in 1942 during World War II. Since then it has drawn countless pilgrims. They come seeking comfort and healing. Especially on February 11 the anniversary of the apparition of the Madonna at Lourdes the Grotta throngs with people. Many are sick or disabled. They come from all over Lombardy.
Even today the Grotta della Madonna di Lourdes continues to be a beacon of hope. People visit before or after visiting loved ones at the nearby Vittore Buzzi Children’s Hospital. The sanctuary offers continuous presence.
The Grotta is a place of everyday miracles. Don Maurizio Cuccolo says that the ordinary becomes extraordinary here. The atmosphere is familial not like the folklore of the French sanctuary. Parishioners see life as providence a tapestry of good deeds and divine intervention.
The Grotta della Madonna di Lourdes stands as a reminder of faith community and the enduring power of hope. It is a place where miracles both big and small touch the lives of those who seek solace within its walls. Remember this Grotta is not just a structure. It’s a living testament to the unwavering spirit of Milan.
