Seven kilometers northwest of Freiberg lies Groβschirma a town steeped in history. Its story begins not in grand castles but in humble beginnings. Founded in the mid-12th century Groβschirma’s early life was intertwined with Altzella Abbey. Until the Protestant Reformation Groβschirma remained under the abbey’s wing.

After the Reformation Groβschirma’s fortunes took a turn. Prince-elector Augustus sold Groβschirma and fourteen other villages to Ulrich von Mordeisen. This transaction marked a shift in ownership and influence. Later Rudolph Mordeisen one of Ulrich’s sons further sold Groβschirma and at least nine other villages to Prince-elector Christian.

Groβschirma’s growth blossomed with the Freiberg Mining Field’s expansion. The Churprinz Friedrich August Erbstolln mine near the Freiberger Mulde river became incredibly profitable. Ore from this mine was transported to Halsbrücke smelters via an ingenious artificial waterway the Churprinzer Bergwerkskanal. This canal a testament to human ingenuity played a crucial role in Groβschirma’s prosperity. Its creation involved incredible labor and vision.

In 2003 Groβschirma’s history took an unexpected turn. Siebenlehn facing financial hardships sought a merger with Groβschirma. This marked a unique event the first time a town joined a rural municipality in Saxony. This union reshaped Groβschirma’s administrative landscape. The combined municipality continued to thrive. Its combined resources provided further strength.

Groβschirma’s story isn’t just about mines and mergers. It’s about resilience adaptation and the spirit of its people. From humble beginnings to its modern form Groβschirma stands as a testament to its rich past and promising future.
