Upon the slopes of the Großer Katzenberg a gentle breeze whispers secrets. Here in this protected landscape a unique story unfolds. The Großer Katzenberg along with its smaller counterpart the Kleiner Katzenberg forms a significant protected landscape in Erfurt. This 10.5 hectare area is a striking feature in the landscape. It’s a haven for rare plants and animals.

The Großer Katzenberg’s geological underpinnings are layers from the Lower Keuper. South-east to south-west facing slopes support dry warm grasslands. These grasslands are in various stages of succession. You’ll also find deciduous trees and shrubs. Small orchards and herb-rich meadows add to the biodiversity. Broad hedges parallel to the hillside are prominent linear features.

In the late 1990s extensive botanical and zoological surveys were conducted. These revealed remarkable findings. The presence of Artemisia pontica Lathyrus hirsutus and Orobanche elatior are especially noteworthy. These plants are significant beyond the regional level. Faunal surveys documented at least seven mammal species three reptile and amphibian species and 56 bird species. The grey partridge and the European stonechat are among the nesting birds. A high number of beetle species are threatened. The area also boasts various grasshopper and butterfly species. Nineteen land snail species were also observed. The wrinkled ramshorn snail a species threatened in Thuringia was found here.

The Großer Katzenberg is more than just a hill. It’s a microcosm teeming with life. It’s a testament to the importance of preserving biodiversity.
