Can you imagine a name less appealing than “Pfuhlgelände an der Britzer Straße” for a place of natural beauty? Thankfully, hidden within this unassuming title lies the Großer Karpfenpfuhl, a much more evocative name. Großer Karpfenpfuhl translates to “Large Carp Pond,” hinting at the area’s rich aquatic past. It is just one of many charming ponds and pools clustered in this area, including the smaller Karpfenpfuhl, the Juncuspfuhl, the Rotkopfpfuhl, the Türkenpfuhl, and the Rothepfuhl. Many of these watery gems are tucked away, almost secretive in their placement. But the Großer Karpfenpfuhl, while not immediately visible, is part of a larger, more accessible landscape. Dominating the skyline near the Großer Karpfenpfuhl is the Noackturm, a repurposed water tower. This landmark stands sentinel amidst fruit trees, providing a clear focal point in the sprawling greenery. Well-maintained paths meander through the landscape, inviting exploration. Just be prepared to encounter many local dog walkers enjoying the area. If you prefer a less canine-centric experience, the Rothepfuhl, just across Britzer Straße, offers a more secluded escape. The Rothepfuhl retains a wilder, more untamed character. A leisurely walk through the dense foliage might reward you with glimpses of the water, a hidden treasure amidst the green. Returning to the Großer Karpfenpfuhl area, consider the nearby street “Am Karpfenpfuhl”. This street, existing since 1928, echoes the name of our featured pond. Its name, like the pond’s, likely stems from an old field designation referring to a former carp pond. Such ponds were once common around Lichterfelde. The street itself, originally designated “Straße 140” in the 1921 development plan, was part of Zehlendorf until 1938, adding another layer to the area’s history. So, while the overall area may bear an awkward name, the Großer Karpfenpfuhl itself offers a glimpse into the natural and historical tapestry of Berlin.
