Hidden beneath the Elbe’s surface for millennia, the Großer Glinder Findling, also known as the Alter Schwede, whispers tales of glacial journeys. This massive boulder, a landmark of Hamburg, rests near Övelgönne. It’s a giant, boasting a circumference of 19.7 meters, a height of 4.5 meters, and a hefty weight of 217 tons. The Großer Glinder Findling isn’t actually Swedish, despite its nickname “Old Swede”. Its granite composition matches that found in Växjö, a region in southern Sweden. This confirms its origin, a 600-kilometer journey across the Baltic Sea. Scientists believe the Großer Glinder Findling was carried by the Elster ice sheet, making it the oldest large glacial erratic in Germany. This journey, hundreds of thousands of years ago, left its mark on the stone. Its surface bears polished edges and scratches, evidence of collisions with other rocks during its icy voyage. The Großer Glinder Findling remained hidden until 1999. It was discovered during dredging operations to deepen the Elbe’s shipping channel. The first attempt to lift the stone failed. It was underestimated to weigh 140 tons. It slipped from its harness and plunged back into the Elbe. Finally, a 1,600-ton crane hoisted the massive rock onto a pontoon and then to the riverbank. Hundreds gathered to witness the spectacle. In June 2000, the Großer Glinder Findling was officially christened “Alter Schwede” with Elbe water. Despite its protected status, the Großer Glinder Findling has been a frequent target of graffiti, often decorated with rival soccer team colors. A special sealant now protects it, allowing for easier cleaning. In 2019, unknown artists covered the entire Großer Glinder Findling in gold paint. This created a spectacle, drawing crowds for photos. The golden sheen didn’t last long, washed away by rain. The remaining gold was removed to restore the stone to its original state. Today, the Großer Glinder Findling remains a popular attraction on Hamburg’s Elbstrand. Its story, a testament to the power of nature and time, continues to fascinate visitors.
