It was mentioned in 990 by Archbishop Sigeric of Canterbury on his return journey from Rome along the Via Francigena. The town’s name likely derives from the Latin “Ripellium,” referring to its location on the banks of the Ticino River, or “Gruppellum,” meaning a small cluster of houses. Two churches, San Rocco and the parish church of San Giorgio, mark the main road and anchor the town. San Giorgio, with its statue of the saint slaying the dragon, is a focal point. The Cairoli family purchased the local castle and estate in 1845. Carlo Cairoli, a Pavia-born surgeon and university professor, couldn’t have foreseen the pivotal role his sons would play in the Risorgimento. The Festa dei Ragazzi, a week-long celebration where children from the town’s four districts compete in various games, marks the end of summer. The “Il Cairoli” biscuit, a local treat made with rice flour, wheat, corn, and a hint of lemon, commemorates Garibaldi’s expedition to Sicily.
