Could a simple bust whisper tales of a composer’s genius and a sculptor’s wanderlust? Here at the Grieg Bust, nestled within the University of Washington campus, we uncover just that. The Grieg Bust, a bronze tribute to Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg, stands as a testament to artistry and a serendipitous journey. The bust’s creator, Finn Frolich, led a life as vibrant as the music Grieg composed. Frolich, a Norwegian-born sculptor, found himself in Seattle quite unexpectedly. After a series of personal and professional setbacks in New York, a drunken morning led him to a ticket booth at Grand Central Station. He simply requested a ticket to the furthest destination possible, and that’s how he ended up in Seattle. Little did he know, this impulsive decision would intertwine his destiny with the legacy of Edvard Grieg. Seattle, in the throes of the Alaska-Yukon-Pacific Exposition in 1909, became Frolich’s artistic playground. He was appointed Director of Sculpture for the exposition, a testament to his talent. Amidst larger-than-life projects, Frolich sculpted the Grieg Bust, commissioned by the Norwegian community of Seattle. They gifted him a Viking ship for his work, a vessel he dreamed of sailing back to Norway. This bust, originally placed near Meany Hall, eventually found its permanent home in Grieg Garden. The Grieg Bust isn’t merely a bronze likeness. It’s a tangible link to a composer whose music echoed across fjords and a sculptor whose life mirrored an adventure novel. Frolich’s journey, marked by impulsive decisions and artistic brilliance, found a quiet culmination in this tribute to Grieg. Here at the bust, their stories converge, reminding us that art often blossoms in the most unexpected places.
