A dream became reality at the Griechisch orthodoxe Gemeinde des hl. Andreas. This magnificent church stands proudly near the A46 motorway in Düsseldorf. The story begins with a priest’s dream. Erzpriester Ioannis Psarakis, dreamt of a church for his Greek Orthodox community. He arrived in Düsseldorf in 1972. He was brought from Crete by Bishop Irineos. Psarakis shared his dream with anyone who would listen. One day, he met engineer Pliatskas in Mülheim an der Ruhr. Pliatskas, a man of action, was captivated by the vision. A handshake sealed their agreement to build the Griechisch orthodoxe Gemeinde des hl. Andreas. The construction happened in stages. First the community center was built. Then came the church itself. Finally, nuns from the Chrissopigi Monastery in Crete painted the stunning interior icons. The dome’s artwork is particularly striking. It depicts the Virgin Mary and Child surrounded by Düsseldorf landmarks. You can see St. Lambertus Church, the castle tower, the Schauspielhaus theater, and Benrather Palace. The Rhine River flows gracefully through the scene. This symbolizes the community’s embrace of their new home in Düsseldorf. The Griechisch orthodoxe Gemeinde des hl. Andreas serves around 12,000 members. It caters to the cities of Düsseldorf, Ratingen, Mettmann, Haan, Hilden, Langenfeld, and Monheim. The church is more than just a place of worship. It stands as a cultural hub for the Greek community in Düsseldorf. It hosts various events. It is a testament to the power of dreams, community, and the beauty of Byzantine art.
