First mentioned in 1193 Grevel’s history is a captivating journey through time. This charming Dortmund suburb nestled in the northeastern part of the city boasts a rich past. Records show it was once called curtes Marsuelde et Greuele et Wande. The name’s origin remains unclear possibly relating to a now-vanished ditch or pit.

Over the centuries Grevel’s name evolved from Griuele to Greuilo then to Greuele and finally Grevele. From 1281 to 1313 the area was held by a knight named Theodoricus. Members of the noble Frydag family controlled Grevel from 1317 to 1400. The Dortmund archives mention a Thilemannus de Grevele in 1380. Johannes Grivel appears in the Volmarsteiner Lehnsregister of 1398.

During the late Middle Ages and early modern period Grevel was a small farming community part of the Kurler parish and the Unna district. A 1486 tax record lists 22 taxpayers in Grevelkuylre. Each paid between one oirt and six gold guilders. By 1705 the number of taxpayers had decreased to 18.

In the 19th century Grevel was a rural community in the Dortmund district and the Brackel office. It covered 433 square kilometers. 241 hectares were farmland 19 hectares meadows and 76 hectares woodland. There were 53 buildings 67 households and 378 residents.

On April 1 1928 Grevel became part of Dortmund. Despite its incorporation Grevel retains its rural charm. Many historic farmhouses remain especially along Greveler Strasse and Werzenkamp. The area’s low population density and numerous farms contribute to its unique character. The incorporation of Grevel and the subsequent expansion of Scharnhorst-Ost significantly changed the landscape. While losing almost half its area Grevel preserved its rural identity. The area is sparsely populated. It features many well-preserved half-timbered houses. Today Grevel is a tranquil residential area. It offers a unique blend of history and modern life. The U42 Stadtbahn line connects Grevel to other parts of Dortmund. Plans exist to extend it to Lanstrop improving transportation links. The connection to the A2 Autobahn near Dortmund-Lanstrop provides convenient access towards Hannover. Grevel is a peaceful corner of Dortmund. It offers a unique glimpse into the city’s history and rural past. It’s a place of quiet charm and a testament to Dortmund’s diverse character.
