“Rocksberg Greenstone,” a unique igneous rock type. Does that name spark your curiosity? It should, because it is this very stone that gives Greenstone its identity.

Welcome to Greenstone. This rural locality in the City of Moreton Bay boasts a history as unique as the rock it’s named after. But its story is quite recent.

In April 2023, the Queensland Government recognized the need to accommodate a growing population. They carved out five new localities and Greenstone was one of them. It was created from land formerly within Rocksberg. So Greenstone is a young place. Its identity is rooted in the earth beneath our feet.

The story of Greenstone is entwined with the story of Rocksberg Greenstone itself. This special rock is more than just a geological formation. The Maori people call greenstone pounamu. It holds great cultural and spiritual significance for them. It is a type of jade highly valued for its beauty and durability. Greenstone has been used for centuries for carvings, jewelry, and ceremonial objects.

Greenstone is believed to possess spiritual qualities. It brings good luck and protection to its wearer. The Maori consider it a taonga, a treasure passed down through generations. It’s a symbol of respect and friendship. The stone has become a symbol of New Zealand’s identity.

Imagine the journey of this stone. Locked away in a distant past, when all was upthrust and under ice. Tremendous heat and pressure formed it. Bands of Pounamu formations run in a North Easterly direction. The greenstone consists mainly of Serpentine and Dunite. The addition of other minerals accounts for why these formations are often referred to as a mineral belt.

The stone was often cast aside for the golden treasure. But most prospectors agree that more Greenstone is found where better than average gold deposits occur.

In 1864, Simon and Samuel discovered a large Greenstone boulder in the Hohonu River. This whole area was once named Pounamu. These two prospectors also started a gold rush to this area. When they moved the stone and watched as the water cleared, coarse gold appeared.

Greenstone necklaces and pendants come in a wide range of designs and styles. One popular design is the hei tiki. It represents fertility and protection. Another common design is the fish hook. It is known as the hei matau and symbolizes strength and prosperity. Other designs feature intricate carvings of animals, symbols, or patterns.

When buying an authentic greenstone necklace, look for stone sourced from New Zealand. There the highest quality greenstone is found. Authentic necklaces are often hand-carved by skilled Maori carvers. Beware of overly cheap greenstone necklaces. They may be made from lower-quality materials or imitations.

Greenstone might be a new name on the map. But remember, the story of Greenstone is ancient. It is a tale of geology, culture, and the enduring power of nature. It’s a story etched in stone, waiting to be discovered.
