Greenpoint Playground

Tucked away in the heart of Greenpoint, the Greenpoint Playground on Franklin Street, between Dupont and Commercial Streets, beckons with its simple charm. Greenpoint Playground might not be the flashiest park in the city. But it holds a special place in the neighborhood. The city acquired the land for Greenpoint Playground back in 1925. Back then, the waterfront lots along Commercial and West Streets were abandoned. This made the playground feel quite remote. Today, the playground offers swings, a popular attraction that can get quite crowded. There are multiple jungle gym areas for kids to explore. Benches provide a place for parents to relax. There are even bathrooms available, a welcome convenience for families. Greenpoint Playground isn’t perfect. The water feature isn’t always working. The grass sometimes gets a bit overgrown, and weeds sprout in the cracks around the rubber mats. The paint on the benches might be peeling. But despite these imperfections, Greenpoint Playground remains a beloved spot for local families. The playground equipment is a bit standard. Climbing sets for toddlers and older kids with platforms, ladders, and slides. A classic tic-tac-toe game and a twisting slide add a touch of fun. There are some lovely trees in Greenpoint Playground. But they don’t offer much shade, except for the benches. The bathrooms have a surprising feature: a changing table. These bathrooms are relatively new and in good condition compared to other parks. Just down the street from Greenpoint Playground is Newtown Barge Park. It boasts a baseball field and great views, adding another recreational option for families in the area.
