Did Gayle and Robert Greenhill ever imagine their name gracing a Harvard Business School building? Right here, at Greenhill House, their legacy intertwines with the global reach of HBS. Greenhill House, originally called Humphrey House, stands as a testament to the evolving nature of business education. Built in 1965, its design, conceived much earlier in 1926 by the renowned firm McKim, Mead & White, was part of the original 1920s campus plan. Financial constraints delayed its construction for decades. The building’s Georgian Revival style echoes the historical significance of the institution it serves. In 2004, Humphrey House underwent a transformation, both inside and out. A generous gift from Gayle and Robert F. Greenhill (MBA 1962) led to its renaming and a complete renovation. The Greenhill Family Endowment for Global Research supports the school’s international research and course development. Today, Greenhill House is the hub for the HBS Global Initiative. This initiative strengthens the school’s international focus by connecting with companies, academic institutions, and alumni worldwide. It’s a fitting home, considering over 30% of MBA students and alumni are international. Robert Greenhill’s career, spanning from Morgan Stanley to Smith Barney and ultimately to his own firm, Greenhill & Co., reflects the global nature of modern business. The Greenhill family’s connection to HBS runs deep, with all three of their children and their spouses being HBS graduates. This building, therefore, represents not just a family’s generosity, but also their belief in the power of global education. Greenhill House stands as a reminder that business, like education, knows no borders.
