A symphony of Byzantine hymns, can you hear them? They echo from the Greek Orthodox Church of the Dormition of Our Lady. This church stands as a testament to the vibrant Greek Orthodox community here in Mount Gravatt East, Brisbane. The Greek Orthodox Church of the Dormition of Our Lady isn’t just a building. It’s a living, breathing piece of history. Its foundation stone was laid in 1974 under the guidance of Reverend Father Isidoros Sideris. He led the community until his passing in 1989. The Greek Orthodox Church of the Dormition of Our Lady is more than bricks and mortar. It’s a beacon of faith, a symbol of community, and a tribute to the enduring spirit of the Greek Orthodox tradition. From 1980 to 2019, Very Reverend Father Constantine Lentakis guided the parish. Today, Reverend Father Nicholas Brown, a graduate of St Andrew’s Greek Orthodox Theological College in Sydney, leads the congregation. He is assisted by Deacon Panayioti Simos. The church falls under the spiritual care of His Eminence Archbishop Makarios, Primate of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia. The Greek Orthodox Church of the Dormition of Our Lady serves both Greek and English speaking Orthodox Christians. In 2022, a historic decision was made. The community voted to officially become a parish under the Holy Archdiocese of Australia. This was a momentous occasion, solidifying its connection to the larger Orthodox community. This transition was celebrated during a visit by Archbishop Makarios himself. He officiated at the Divine Liturgy and spoke about the bright future of the parish. The Archbishop also highlighted the important role the church plays in the local community. He even mentioned the potential establishment of a kindergarten. This reflects the growth and evolving needs of the faithful in the area. The Greek Orthodox Church of the Dormition of Our Lady isn’t just a place of worship. It is a place of community, a place of history, a place of hope.
