Nestled in Glasgow’s Dowanhill district stands the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Luke. It’s a beautiful testament to faith and history. The cathedral wasn’t always Orthodox. It began its life in 1877 as Belhaven Church for the United Presbyterian Church of Scotland. Architect James Sellars designed the church. He drew inspiration from Dunblane Cathedral and incorporated Norman Gothic elements. The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Luke boasts stunning stained glass windows. These windows, designed by Stephen Adam, depict scenes from both the Old and New Testaments. They add a rich layer of color and narrative to the space. In 1929, Belhaven Church became part of the Church of Scotland. The congregation continued to worship there until 1960. A turning point came in 1960. Sir Reo Stakis, a prominent Greek businessman, made a generous donation. This allowed the Greek community in Glasgow to acquire the building and establish the first center of Orthodoxy in Scotland. The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Luke officially became a cathedral in 1970. Patriarch Nicholas VI of Alexandria, while attending the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, elevated St. Luke’s to cathedral status. This was done with the blessing of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople. A marble plaque with gold lettering commemorates this event. It’s located at the right side of the entrance hall. Even the Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew I of Constantinople visited the Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Luke in 1996. He celebrated the Divine Liturgy during his visit. The Greek Orthodox Cathedral of St Luke serves not only as a place of worship for the Greek community. It also acts as a meeting place for Orthodox students and scientists. They come from all over to study and work in Scotland. The cathedral welcomes visitors of all faiths. Its traditional Easter service is a popular event. The cathedral’s participation in Glasgow’s annual Doors Open Day offers another chance to experience this historical gem.
