From a beauty salon to a beacon of faith, the Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church has a story to tell. Here at 2365 Frederick Douglass Boulevard, the spirit of resilience resonates. In the early 1950s, a small group began meeting in a beauty salon, dreaming of a dedicated space. Their dream took shape in 1954 with the church’s first official opening. Tragedy struck in August 2000 when a fire ravaged their building on Manhattan Avenue. Undeterred, the congregation, led by Pastor Frank Blackshear, found a new home just months later. This very spot, on Frederick Douglass Boulevard, became their sanctuary. They rebuilt and reaffirmed their commitment to faith. Now, picture a young Christopher Lance Williams among them. He was a familiar face, part of the church family. Little did they know he was on a path destined to lead them. Williams, a grandson of Pastor Blackshear, honed his talents, becoming a gifted organist. He directed music for several churches, including a 12-year tenure at a Connecticut church. He lectured and directed gospel music at Iona College. Simultaneously, he served the community as a New York City police officer, gaining experience in mental health, substance abuse prevention, and child protection. When the pandemic hit, Williams stepped up, bringing services and Bible study online, connecting the Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church community in a time of isolation. He even helped other ministry leaders adapt to the virtual world. Alongside his wife, Amaranta, he founded Ministry That Matters, providing protective equipment, food, and support. In 2021, after earning four degrees from Nyack College and Alliance Theological Seminary, Williams was chosen from nine candidates to lead Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church. He became pastor-elect, a historic moment, marking him as the youngest Baptist pastor in Harlem. The following year, he was officially installed as senior pastor. The Greater Zion Hill Baptist Church isn’t just a building; it’s a testament to the power of faith, resilience, and community. It’s a story of rising from ashes, of a young man answering a call to serve, and of a congregation finding strength in unity. Here, at 2365 Frederick Douglass Boulevard, their journey continues to inspire.
