The church’s roots trace back to Chicago. In 1967, a group of deacons sought to establish a mission. Their goal was to win souls for Christ. Deacons Willie F. Jordan Sr., Govan Campbell, John Collins Jr., and Saul Goner led the charge.
They discovered a vacant church building. It was True Vine M.B. Church. They reorganized and renamed it Great True Vine M.B. Church.
The church began its mission at 3226 W. Roosevelt Road in Chicago. Rev. Walter Coolidge became the first pastor. He later resigned. Rev. Curtis Brooks then took the helm. He also resigned later.
In 1969, Rev. L.C. Caver and his congregation merged with Great True Vine. This merger strengthened the church. The Lord blessed the church to purchase the building on Roosevelt Road. The congregation grew. Many new members joined.
Deacon Willie Jordan Sr. and Deacon Govan Campbell felt called to ministry. Rev. Willie Jordan founded Jordan Temple Baptist Church. Rev. Govan Campbell started Holy Ground Baptist Church.
Deacon John Collins Jr. became Chairman of the Deacon board. The church continued to grow. More ministers, deacons, and members joined.
In 1974, the church moved to 5950 W. Chicago Ave. Then in 1982, they moved again. This time to 5932-38 W. Division St. The building needed significant repairs. The pastor, deacons, members, and friends worked hard. Bobbie Williams and Alex Bruno helped remodel the building.
On December 22, 1982, they marched into their new place of worship. Rev. Forrest Norvell prayed. Rev. Willie A. Kelly preached the first sermon.
The church grew significantly. More deacons were added. Preachers confessed their call to ministry.
In 1996, Pastor L.C. Caver resigned after 27 years. He asked the church to accept Rev. John E. Collins Sr. as pastor. On October 6, 1996, Rev. John E. Collins Sr. became pastor.
Under Pastor John Collins’ leadership, many ministries were added. More preachers accepted their calling. Some became pastors. Souls were saved. Programs to feed the hungry were created. Property was purchased. The church building was remodeled.
Pastor Collins focused on Christian Education. The church joined the Sunlight District, United Baptist State Convention, and the National Baptist Convention. Their motto became “What pray and the Word can’t do, just can’t be done.”
