Founded in 1950 the Greater Southern Metropolitan Baptist Church stands tall on Fullerton Street Detroit. It’s a cornerstone of the community a place of faith and fellowship for over seven decades. This wasn’t always the case. The church’s roots trace back to 1951 as the Motor Cities Association of Southern Baptist Churches. Six churches and two more supporting them formed this association affiliated with the Arkansas Baptist State Convention. The Home Mission Board joined in 1953 showing early support for this burgeoning network of faith.

Early leadership was vital. Rev Olin Sisk served as interim missionary in 1951. Rev Fred Hubbs followed in 1952. To better serve the community the association was divided into five zones. This strategic move helped spread the gospel and strengthened their impact. The Detroit Baptist Association officially formed in 1957. It grew rapidly adding twelve more congregations within five years.

The name changed to Greater Detroit Baptist Association in 1963 reflecting its expanding influence. The Baptist State Convention of Michigan formed in 1957 further solidifying the Baptist presence in the state. Rev Jay Brown became the first superintendent of missions in 1960. He served two terms before six other Directors of Missions followed. Rev Joe Ryckman held the position from 1995 until his retirement in 2010. At that point the association consisted of 45 congregations.

The association’s work extended beyond Detroit’s borders. It encompasses all of Wayne County. It even has member churches in Oakland and Washtenaw Counties. The outreach expanded to student ministries at various colleges including Wayne State University in Detroit. This university alone has a large student population including many international students. Their work involved the Spanish and Slavic communities initially. The church now has ten ethnic congregations preaching the gospel in six languages.

The Greater Southern Metropolitan Baptist Church is more than a building. It’s a testament to faith community and perseverance.
