This church, my friends, holds a captivating story that stretches back almost two centuries. Greater Saint Peter Baptist Church’s history began in the early 1800s with a freed slave named Dudley Brooks. Brooks, a skilled ship caulker, had earned his freedom by saving the life of his master’s wife. Driven by love and determination, he saved enough money to purchase his wife’s freedom as well, bringing her to Scranton, later renamed Pascagoula, Mississippi. In their humble home on Market Street, Brooks started a small prayer group, eventually growing into the First Free Mission Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend George Washington. As the congregation grew, they sought a larger space. They found it under a massive oak tree on what is now Canal Street. Imagine families gathering for worship, each assigned a specific root from the oak to serve as their pew, their faith as sturdy as the tree itself. A ship’s bell, hung from the tree, called the faithful to service and alerted the community to the passing of their own. The image of that oak, a symbol of strength and endurance, perfectly embodies the spirit of Greater Saint Peter Baptist Church, a spirit that persevered even when the original oak and bell were lost to history. We know that the church continued to thrive because in 1819, a deed was officially recorded in 1885, documenting Brooks’ transfer of land to the First Free Mission Baptist Church. This document, a tangible piece of history, proves the church’s long and rich past, a past that speaks volumes about the enduring power of faith.
