It was founded in 1920 when Rev. Thomas Jefferson Martin convinced a group of Sunday baseball players to trade their bats for Bibles. They moved from a wooden building to a cinder-block structure and finally, to the two-floor building we see today. Greater Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church has even outlasted a near-collapse during a renovation attempt in the 1940s. The concrete blocks fell twice, but Bro. L.T. Hobson and Deacon Taylor prayed, and the building finally stood. Greater Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church is also a part of the area’s history. It sits on the site of the first “colored” school in the Madison County School System. A student at this school, Mrs. Gussie Hobson Savage, still worships at Greater Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church. Greater Saint Luke Missionary Baptist Church has seen a great deal of growth. What started as a small group of faithful members has become a vibrant community with numerous programs and ministries.
