Picture this a humble brush arbor. This is where Greater Saint Luke Church began. It all started in 1920. A sanctified preacher Rev Thomas Jefferson Martin had a vision. He wanted to gather a group of Sunday baseball players. His goal was to convince them to trade their bats for Bibles.

Greater Saint Luke Church wasn’t always a grand building. It began as a small one-room structure. It stood on the very spot where the current church now stands. The land was purchased in 1941 for just $200. This marked a significant moment for the congregation. They finally owned their own property.

The early years were full of challenges. The church was located on a dirt road. Not many people lived nearby. Yet the faithful few persevered. They held outdoor meetings and services. Mother Pearl Harris a beloved member filled the church with her singing. She sang “A Charge to Keep I Have”. Her voice echoed in the small building.

The church faced many trials. In one memorable incident the cinder blocks for a new building kept falling. The congregation almost gave up hope. Then Bro LT and Deacon Taylor prayed. The blocks finally stood firm. The story illustrates the congregation’s unwavering faith.

A pivotal event occurred in 1952. A conflict divided the congregation. One group left and formed New St Luke Church. Those who remained called themselves Greater Saint Luke Church. This split was a difficult time but the church endured. It continued to grow stronger.

Greater Saint Luke Church has undergone significant renovations. In the 1970s and 1980s the building expanded. The church added new features including a baptismal pool. They replaced the old mimeograph machine with a copier. The sanctuary was remodeled numerous times. It grew from a small space to a larger structure.

In 1995 a major expansion added an education wing. It also contained classrooms a pastor’s office and a children’s care center. The church continuously acquired more land. This expansion reflected the church’s growing congregation.

Rev Anderson served as pastor for 40 years. His powerful preaching was legendary. The church also became known for its vibrant music ministry. Descendants of the original Hobson Brothers led the music.

Today Greater Saint Luke Church stands as a testament to faith perseverance and community. It has grown from a small gathering to a thriving church. It continues its mission of service and outreach. This place of worship is a symbol of hope and resilience in San Diego. The church stands proudly. It is a living legacy of faith and community.
