Founded in 1895 by members of Mount Gilead Baptist Church, Greater Saint James Baptist Church has a rich history. Rev. J. Francis Robinson and 30 dedicated members laid its foundation. They envisioned a place where faith and community could flourish.

In its early days, the congregation met in a Y.W.CA.. By 1913, they embarked on constructing their own building. Dr. J.H. Winn, the pastor from 1910 to 1940, spearheaded this effort. Services were initially held in the church basement until the sanctuary was completed in 1918.

Its blocky mass gives it an almost fortress-like appearance.
