Stepping inside Greater Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, one can almost hear the echoes of prayers whispered over generations. This church, located in Houston, Texas, isn’t just a building; it’s a living testament to faith, resilience, and community. Greater Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, originally known as Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, traces its roots back to 1893. It emerged as an offshoot of Hopewell Baptist Church, founded by Walsh Jackson, Jeff Dunn, Phyllis Lewis, and Jordan Graham. The church’s journey began in a different location, where Colvin Memorial now stands. By 1920, the congregation had moved to a site near the Pleasant Grove cemetery. The current building holds a unique history. It once served as Pleasant Grove School. However, following school integration in the 1960s, the property reverted to the church due to a prior agreement. Some envisioned a golf course on the land. Yet, through the determined efforts of John Willie Jenkins, Calvin Powell, Murphy Gray, Robert Powell, and others, the building was renovated. It became the new home of Greater Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in the 1970s. This church is more than bricks and mortar. It embodies the spirit of its community. Its vision includes love, commitment, evangelism, family, excellence, tithing, obedience, character, and a spirit filled with praise, worship, preaching, teaching, forgiveness, fasting, prayer, and faith.
