In 1978, a small group gathered at Tabernacle Missionary Baptist Church in Houston. Their mission was ambitious: to establish a new church, a beacon of faith. They named it Greater Outreach Missionary Baptist Church. Their first pastor, Reverend Lawrence Jarvis, led this faithful flock of ninety members. Greater Outreach Missionary Baptist Church initially lacked a physical home. The congregation, fueled by faith and prayer, held services wherever they could. Tabernacle Baptist Church generously opened its doors, providing a temporary sanctuary. After only three Sundays, Greater Outreach found its first home at a former service station on Telephone Road. They worshipped there for two years, transforming the space into a vibrant hub of faith.

Greater Outreach Missionary Baptist Church moved again in 1981, this time to Nunn Street. A period of transition followed. Reverend Jarvis resigned, leaving the congregation to decide its future. They chose to persevere, electing Reverend L. Kimble as their new leader. Under Reverend Kimble’s guidance, the church thrived and the membership grew. Another move, just next door on Nunn Street, provided a slightly larger space. Finally, in 1991, Greater Outreach Missionary Baptist Church found its current sanctuary at 6525 Northdale Street. This marked a significant milestone, a testament to the church’s resilience and growth.

Reverend Kimble served Greater Outreach Missionary Baptist Church faithfully for 25 years, resigning in 2006. Reverend James Blade stepped in as interim pastor, guiding the church through another period of change. After a careful search, Reverend Darrell Stroman became the new pastor in 2007. His tenure was short, and the church soon found itself seeking another spiritual leader. Reverend Kimble graciously returned as interim pastor, providing stability during the transition. The search continued, with numerous ministers invited to share their teachings. In 2008, Reverend Kenneth Eakins, Sr. accepted the call to lead Greater Outreach Missionary Baptist Church. His installation in 2009 marked the beginning of a new chapter. Reverend Eakins focused on growth, both spiritual and physical. He oversaw the purchase of land adjacent to the church, a sign of the church’s continued expansion.

Today, Greater Outreach Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to the power of faith, perseverance, and community. From its humble beginnings, it has grown into a thriving congregation, a testament to the unwavering dedication of its members and the guidance of its pastors.
