Founded in 1968 as True Vine Baptist Church Greater Oak Grove Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Its humble beginnings in the home of Brother and Sister Leo Gibson on Kirk Street Houston are a far cry from its current location. Imagine just a handful of devoted souls Rev MD Smith Rev Fred Dixon and Rev Marvin Bennett among them. Their first service was held at True Level Hall on Lyons Avenue. Slowly the congregation grew adding members like Brother Ray Jackson and Sister Pearl Owens. After six months the burgeoning church moved to the Baptist Theological Seminary on Chew Street.
Early leadership saw Rev Bennett as the first pastor. His tenure was short-lived. The church faced a period without a pastor. Growth continued. By 1995 a multipurpose wing was added boosting the church’s capacity for fellowship and learning. This expansion solidified its position as a vital community hub.
Pastor Jesse H Jones Sr dedicated 35 years to Greater Oak Grove. His leadership and the support of his wife Sister Verstine guided the church through decades of growth and change. His motto “Let every saved soul help save a soul” reflects the church’s core values. The Jesse H Jones Sr Memorial Building a testament to his legacy stands as a reminder of his dedication.
The passing of Pastor Jones marked a significant turning point. Rev D Earl Lewis was appointed the third pastor. He had previously served as assistant pastor under Pastor Jones. He brought a fresh vision for the church. His “Campus for the Community” initiative saw the introduction of various community outreach programs. These included senior citizen nutritional sites helping hands community services and a food pantry.
Today Greater Oak Grove Baptist Church stands proudly at 9829 Sandra Street in Houston. It’s a vibrant place of worship and a vital community asset. It serves as a beacon of faith hope and charity.
