The aroma of freshly baked bread wafted through the air as we stood before Greater New Saint Luke Baptist Church. It’s a story of faith, resilience, and community forged in the heart of New Orleans.
The church was founded in 1920 by Reverend Thomas Jefferson Martin. Back then, the only church nearby was a Methodist church. But Reverend Martin was a sanctified preacher who had a special mission. He set his sights on a group of Sunday baseball players, known throughout the area, who played ball instead of attending church. But they all had been brought up in Baptist churches, and their faith was deep in their hearts. Reverend Martin, with great determination, pleaded with them to “follow me as I follow God.”
Eventually, the Hobson brothers and many other good brothers, like Mr. T.T. Bingham, gathered together at a brush arbor and started having church.
The story of Greater New Saint Luke Baptist Church is one of transformation and growth. It began as a small gathering in a brush arbor, but today, the church boasts a beautiful two-story structure that has undergone many transformations. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of faith, fellowship and the community that has supported it throughout the years. This has been a part of the community that gives its members a place to learn and grow and it has always had an open door policy for everyone.
