What began in a home on South Central Avenue now stands as a beacon. This is Greater New Light Baptist Church. Its story began in December 1951. Twenty-five people envisioned a new church. They met at Sister Josephine Williams’ home.
On December 16, 1951, Rev J.D. Trahan and Rev J.O. Barnett organized the church. Sister Gibbs served as clerk. The church officers included A. Gus Mallard and Willie “Bill” Hill. Mrs. J.D. Trahan was treasurer. Rev. Barnett encouraged them to keep God first.
The members quickly found a storefront at 92nd and Central Avenue. On Christmas Day 1951, Rev. Trahan secured the current property. He paid the first $100. At the next meeting, he asked each member for $25. Everyone responded.
Originally, the church was Saint Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church. Mary Burns helped rename it The New Light Baptist Church. Another church already had that name so the word “Greater” was added. Thus, Greater New Light Baptist Church was born.
Members held fundraisers to purchase the property. The church moved to a garage behind the present site. Services were held there. Soon after, Rev. Trahan and his wife resigned. Rev. Townsend became pastor in February 1952. Doc Langworthy became treasurer.
By October 1952, they had enough money to build. The groundbreaking was held on the 3rd Sunday in October 1952. By September 1953, the church was dedicated. It had 135 members.
In August 1958, Rev. Townsend resigned. The church had grown to over 700 members. The number of deacons and ushers also increased significantly.
Today, Sister Dorothy Martin Shell remains from the original founders. Many current members have been part of the Greater New Light family for over 50 years.
In October 1958, Rev. Walter Washington became pastor. He led the church for 49 years. He made additions and improvements to the building. The church added modern conveniences.
Rev. Washington retired in December 2007. In August 2008, Dr. Patrick D. Ross accepted the leadership. He delivered his first sermon on September 7, 2008.
Greater New Light Missionary Baptist Church has met spiritual needs for over seven decades. It is a Word-centered ministry in South Los Angeles. Dr. Ross teaches with clarity under the Holy Spirit’s guidance. The church’s mission is to share Jesus’ love and light.
Greater New Light continues to welcome new members. Dr. Ross preaches the Word of God to save souls. The church continues to move forward. You are welcome to join their journey. They glorify the name of the Lord. The church is committed to fellowship, discipleship, service, evangelism, and worship.
