The church’s journey started in a humble setting. A small group of believers gathered in a private home. They envisioned a place where they could worship and grow together. This initial gathering marked the genesis of Greater New Jericho Baptist Church. The founders’ commitment led them to secure a more permanent location. A storefront at the corner of 92nd and Central Avenue served as their first official sanctuary. This marked a crucial step in the church’s evolution. Later, the congregation acquired the property where the Greater New Jericho Baptist Church stands today. Initially, services were held in a garage at the back of the property while they raised funds to build a proper church building. Their dedication bore fruit. In October 1952, the groundbreaking ceremony marked the start of a new era for the Greater New Jericho Baptist Church. The church we see today is the result of their hard work and unwavering faith. The church’s name also has a unique story. Originally called Saint Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church, it was later changed to The New Light Baptist Church. Upon discovering another church with the same name, “Greater” was added, giving us the name we know today: Greater New Jericho Baptist Church.
