Reverend W.E. Nesbitt had a dream. This dream led to the founding of Greater New Hope Baptist Church in 1984. The church’s story is one of faith. It is also a story of perseverance.
Greater New Hope Baptist Church started small. The congregation first met in Reverend Nesbitt’s basement. As the church grew, they moved to different locations. Reverend Nesbitt wanted to build a permanent home for his flock.
He faced resistance. Despite this, he pursued land for the church. With help from the Greenville Southern Baptist Brotherhood, the church was completed in 1985. It was a testament to their faith.
After Reverend Nesbitt’s death in 1989, the church sought a new leader. Several interim pastors served. In 1993, Reverend Dennis Smith arrived. He became pastor in 1994. Greater New Hope Baptist Church grew spiritually and physically under his leadership.
Greater New Hope Baptist Church adopted a motto. It is “For we walk by faith, not by sight”. This reflects the church’s journey. It shows reliance on God’s guidance.
Reverend Smith had a mission. He wanted to free people from demonic strongholds. He taught and preached the word of God. He aimed for all to walk in total victory.
Today, Greater New Hope Baptist Church continues to thrive. It is a fellowship of believers. They are full of love. They stand as a beacon of hope in the community.
Let’s fast forward to the present. Dr. William H. King, III now leads Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church. He was born in Houston in 1965. He is the tenth of thirteen children.
Dr. King’s commitment extends beyond the church. He is the Chief Chaplain for the Dickinson Police Department. He is also President of the American Baptist Convention of Texas. Furthermore, he is the Moderator of the Southeast District Association.
Under Dr. King’s leadership, Greater New Hope expanded its ministries. These include the Greater New Hope Christian Academy. There is also the Family Life Center. He also started the Equipping the Saints School of Ministry. In addition, there is a Health and Healing Ministry. A Housing Ministry was founded too.
Dr. King spearheaded the effort to designate Magnolia Cemetery as a historical landmark. It is next to the church. This cemetery is the only African American Cemetery in Dickinson. Burials there predate the 1850s.
Dr. King served on the Dickinson City Council for seven terms. He was elected Mayor Pro-Tem twice. He represented the council on the Houston-Galveston Area Council Board for eight years. He even served as Chairman of the Board.
His dedication extends to the Dickinson Ministerial Alliance. As President, he provides leadership to pastors in North Galveston County. He coordinates community events. These events include leadership conferences and community picnics.
Greater New Hope’s Junior Mission Ministry is also vital. It empowers young women. They serve others with compassion. They participate in community service. They also support missions globally.
Dr. King’s vision unifies people. He brings together pastors, politicians, and people from all walks of life. He enhances the quality of life in the community. He is an ambassador for Jesus. He is saved and filled with the Holy Ghost.
Greater New Hope Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith, leadership, and community service. Its history reflects resilience. Its present demonstrates a commitment to making a difference.
