Greater Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church

“A storefront on Main Street? Can you imagine?” a voice whispers, pulling your attention to Greater Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church. It all began in such humble surroundings back in 1922. A small group, led by the spirited Missionary N.W. King, gathered on September 27th. Their faith filled the modest space as they officially established Greater Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. King, a guiding force, chaired the foundational council, with Rev. P.R. Smith as temporary clerk. This council also made another crucial decision. They called Rev. P.R. Smith as their temporary pastor. The church’s first officers were also chosen. Bro. F.R. Richardson became a deacon. Sister Elvira Williams took on the role of treasurer. Bro. Daniel Vann served as clerk and joined the Deacon Board. It wasn’t long before Rev. Smith’s temporary position became permanent. He became Greater Mount Tabor’s first official pastor. Under his guidance, the congregation expanded, both in numbers and in their spiritual devotion. Their growth prompted a move to a new location at the corner of LaSalle and Oregon Streets. The church’s journey continued with a series of devoted leaders. Rev. J.P. Bouler became the second pastor in April 1937. Numerical and spiritual growth continued to mark his tenure. Then, on December 11, 1941, Rev. W.J. Glover took the helm as Greater Mount Tabor’s third pastor, faithfully serving the growing congregation. Rev. L.B. Bradford followed as the fourth pastor, beginning his five-year service on March 19, 1950. Rev. T.J. James, a visionary leader, became the fifth pastor on October 18, 1954. His remarkable 32 years and 8 months of service propelled Greater Mount Tabor forward in every aspect. His leadership strengthened the church spiritually, numerically, and financially. His influence extended beyond the church walls, touching the community, state, and even the national level. After Rev. James’ retirement in June 1988, Rev. Harvey Nichols served as interim pastor until October 1989. During this transition, the church acquired a new parsonage on Grace Street. The legacy of Greater Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church is a testament to the power of faith and dedicated leadership. From a small storefront to its present edifice, the church’s story is one of growth, perseverance, and unwavering devotion.
