“Hungry, and you gave me food. Thirsty, and you gave me drink.” These words from Matthew echo through the very foundation of Greater Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. It’s a legacy etched in service and love.

Greater Mount Pleasant Baptist Church has stood as a beacon. For over a century it has offered refuge and strength to its members and the South Atlanta community. Its story is one of visions and missions. It is a testament to those who have labored diligently.

The church’s humble beginnings trace back to 1908. Reverend Ezekiel Kineard gathered Christian believers. He shared his dreams for the community. After prayerful discussions, Greater Mount Pleasant Baptist Church emerged. It became a spirit-filled church with a human touch. It reached out to meet the needs of the community.

For the next four years, the church grew rapidly. More importantly it became a symbol of Christian hope and love. In 1912, Reverend Kineard passed away. His mission had already left a lasting mark on the hearts of many.

Over the following decades, Greater Mount Pleasant Baptist Church was blessed. Anointed men of God dedicated themselves to spreading the Good News. Reverends Rowland, Davis, Trier, and others pastored for a total of 17 years. Then came R.H. Milner, Albert M. Lampkin, and Benjamin W. Bickers. They continued the work that had been laid.

In 1958, Reverend Otis Levan Blackshear accepted the pastoralship. Under his leadership, Greater Mount Pleasant Baptist Church continued to shine. It manifested God’s goodness to all. Rev. Blackshear directed the church to address the community’s needs. These included physical, mental, spiritual, and social needs.

Numerous programs and ministries were designed. They served as support systems for members and the community. Meals were delivered to senior citizens. Food baskets and clothes were distributed to needy families. The Board of Christian Education was established. Men, Women, and Youth Ministries were formed. A Scholarship Fund was created to assist high school graduates.

Property purchases and building expansions occurred during Rev. Blackshear’s tenure. He retired in June 2008 becoming Pastor Emeritus.

With Christ as the guiding force, Greater Mount Pleasant pressed forward. On December 31, 2008, Reverend Clinton Dwayne McFarland became the Senior Pastor. He revised the church website. A new Marquee sign was constructed. The Shelton Fellowship Hall was renovated. In 2012, a second location was acquired in Lithonia. Live streaming began in 2013.

In November 2014, Pastor Clinton McFarland resigned. Almost half the membership followed him to establish another church.

Greater Mount Pleasant began searching for a new Pastor. Reverend Roderick Weathersby became interim Pastor. In December 2014, Pastor Emeritus Rev. O. L. Blackshear Sr. had a heart attack. He passed away in January 2015. This marked the end of an era. These were dark and tough times for the church.

Reverend Roderick Weathersby was elected Senior Pastor in August 2015. Under his leadership, the church began to heal. He reignited the Food and Clothing Ministry. The sanctuary was remodeled.

In 2020, the coronavirus pandemic struck. Greater Mount Pleasant adapted to hybrid worship services. It survived the pandemic.

Reverend Weathersby resigned in June 2022.

In July 2022, Reverend Micheal Benton became Interim Pastor. His leadership brought healing and harmony. His programs helped put the church on better financial footing.

In January 2024, Reverend Doctor Michael A. Chambers became the pastor. He implemented a 40-day prayer campaign. He began contacting sick and elderly members.

Dr. Chambers and First Lady Lizzie B. Chambers have implemented a “Family Meet and Get to Know” practice. He has already affected facility improvements. He has conducted meetings with politicians and community leaders.

There is a feeling of great and exciting times ahead for Greater Mount Pleasant Baptist Church. The church stands ready to continue its legacy of faith and service. Remember the words of Matthew. This church embodies the spirit of feeding the hungry and welcoming all.
