The story of Greater Mount Nebo Baptist Church is woven into the fabric of New Orleans’ Lower Ninth Ward, a community deeply marked by resilience and faith. Standing tall on a New Orleans street, the church has been a beacon of hope for decades, enduring the storms of life with unwavering strength.

Founded in 1988 by Reverend Charles Williams Duplessis, Greater Mount Nebo Baptist Church quickly became a pillar of the neighborhood. Reverend Duplessis, a man of undeniable passion and dedication, was called into the ministry at his home church, Zion Hill Missionary Baptist Church in New Orleans, after serving as a Deacon, Sunday School Teacher, and Trustee. His ministry’s early years were marked by a series of moves, from the Howard Johnson Hotel in Metairie to the Congregational Baptist Church in the Lower Ninth Ward. But the congregation persevered, driven by their faith and the vision of their pastor.

The church eventually found its permanent home on Flood Street, a two-story house renovated into a sanctuary, classrooms, offices, a fellowship hall, and a dining room. Greater Mount Nebo became a haven for residents of the Lower Ninth Ward, offering not just spiritual guidance but also a sense of belonging and community support.

Through the trials of life, including the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the church has stood firm. The storm destroyed their building, but their spirit remained unbroken. The congregation, led by the resilient Reverend Duplessis and his wife, Thirawer, rebuilt their lives and their church. Greater Mount Nebo Baptist Church remains a testament to the enduring power of faith and the unwavering spirit of New Orleans.
