Founded in 1893 the Greater Morning Star Baptist Church stands before you. It’s a testament to faith perseverance and community. The original Morning Star Baptist Church was formed by several Christians. They sought a place of worship grounded in the Bible. Rev Washington M Taylor led the charge as pastor and president. Early members included Brother George Variste Brother Esau Brandon and Brother Anthony Wilson. They established a school alongside their church. This showed their commitment to education and faith.
The church continued to grow. Reverend Louis Severan became the second pastor. He oversaw the formation of the church’s first Usher Board in 1939. After Reverend Severan’s passing Rev Albert Parker led the church. He established the first church choir. The church faced changes and challenges. Reverend David Brandon served as an interim pastor. Then Reverend Wilbert Jackson became the fourth pastor. He appointed deacons and deaconesses. He also established Pastor’s Aid and Home Mission.
In 1977 the church’s name changed to Greater Morning Star Baptist Church. This marked a new chapter in its history. Reverend Jackson served for 26 years before becoming Pastor Emeritus. His legacy of integrity and teaching remains. Reverend Charles L Burris Sr became the fifth pastor. He oversaw the construction of a new and larger sanctuary. This was a major undertaking for the growing congregation. The church moved to a new location in 2006.
The building you see today is a result of this vision. It stands as a symbol of renewal and growth. Reverend Burris’s dedication is remembered by the congregation. Sadly he passed in 2009. Reverend Charles Lee Burris Jr followed as the sixth pastor. He continued to guide the church. He established new ministries and updated the church’s constitution. Today Greater Morning Star Baptist Church continues to thrive. It is a vibrant community of faith. It’s a place where people gather to worship learn and support one another. The church’s story is one of resilience and spiritual growth. It continues to serve God and the community. It’s a testament to the power of faith. It’s a place where history and hope meet.
