Why did a church start in a basement? Here at Greater Missionary Baptist Church, that’s exactly how the story began. On November 18, 1984, Greater Faith Missionary Baptist Church, as it was first known, held its very first service in the basement of Pastor and Sister Robinson’s home. Their house on Forrer Street held not just the beginnings of a church, but a family’s unwavering faith. This small congregation, led by Pastor Robinson, consisted of Sister Robinson, their children, and several of his sisters and their families. Imagine the hymns echoing through the basement walls, the close-knit fellowship, and the shared dream of building a community of faith. The church formally organized on January 20, 1985, at Springhill Missionary Baptist Church. Rev. Frank Robinson, Jr., became the officially elected pastor. The church’s name later changed to Greater Missionary Baptist Church. Their first building, a storefront at 13019 Puritan Avenue, was purchased on July 21, 1985. This marked a significant step, moving from a basement to a dedicated space for worship and ministry. The church continued to grow, and its needs expanded. On April 24, 1994, the congregation moved to its current location here on Rosa Parks Boulevard. From a humble basement to this magnificent structure, the Greater Missionary Baptist Church stands as a testament to the power of faith, family, and community. Pastor Robinson has been the church’s sole pastor since its founding. He’s a man dedicated to service, with a doctorate from Union Baptist Seminary School of Theology and experience at Southern Baptist Seminary and William Tyndale College. He and his wife Carol have three children, five grandchildren, and a great-grandchild, further demonstrating his commitment to family and community. Greater Missionary Baptist Church isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a place where lives are transformed, where people are brought to Jesus, and where they grow in faith. It’s a testament to the vision of Pastor and Sister Robinson and the dedication of its members.
