This is Greater Leavy a beacon in the Bankhead Courts district. Founded in 1970 by Reverend Paul Cainion he envisioned a place of worship in a neighborhood known for its challenges. He saw past the dangers and started building God’s work. The original church building was a former nightclub damaged by fire. Its restoration was just one hurdle. The church lacked heat it was small but the community’s spiritual needs were immense. People came to worship regardless.
Later Greater Leavy moved to its present location on Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway. The work continued. The church’s growth mirrored that of the community it served. Under Reverend Cainion’s leadership renovations began in 2000. A larger sanctuary new classrooms and administrative offices were added. Sadly Reverend Cainion didn’t see the project’s completion. He passed away in 2002. The congregation then elected Reverend Willie C Williams as the church’s second pastor.
Reverend Williams oversaw the completion of Reverend Cainion’s vision. New pews stained glass windows a baptismal pool and more offices were added. The newly renovated church was dedicated in 2004.
