“Can you feel it?” That’s the question that comes to mind as you stand before Greater Joy Baptist Church. It’s not just a building. It is a testament to faith and community. Greater Joy Baptist Church has a rich history. It began in 1949. Elder Ortho Williams and his wife Sister Anna felt the Lord’s call. Evangelist Gertrude Kelly joined them in this mission. Their first member was Sister Velma Hunt.

The early days of Greater Joy Baptist Church were humble. The congregation purchased land on Laverne Street. They cleared mesquite trees and bushes. A tent served as their first place of worship. Later, they bought a barrack from Kelly AFB. Elder Williams built a new edifice.

Elder Williams served faithfully until his death in 1963. Elder Paul Roberson followed him. He inspired the church. His time was brief. Elder R. T. Iglehart then took the lead in 1966.

Under Elder Iglehart’s direction, Greater Joy Baptist Church grew. He emphasized soul winning and salvation. Years later, he renovated the original building. In 1981, he launched a five-year building fund. In March 1985, the church dedicated a new sanctuary. Pastor Iglehart and his wife served until his passing in 1990.

In 1991, Pastor Duane and Sister Melonie Hammons took over. They had high goals for the church. This included a Christian-based childcare facility. They served until 2002.

Then, in 2002, Pastor Edward E. Kemper arrived. He renamed the church Greater Joy Temple COGIC. He and Sister Kemper paid off the mortgage. They bought the lot next to the church. They enhanced the building until 2010.

In August 2010, Bishop S.E. Iglehart appointed Pastor Dewey C. Johnson. Pastor Johnson formed a Board of Trustees. He increased membership. He completed Phase I renovations. These included the Fellowship Hall and church offices. Phase II includes parking lot paving and inside renovations.

Greater Joy Baptist Church is more than bricks and mortar. It is a place of love and positivity. It offers spiritual guidance. It supports its members.
