Founded in 1924 Greater Fellowship Baptist Church stands as a testament to faith and community. Its story is one of resilience adaptation and unwavering devotion. Originally located on Markham and Haynes streets the church quickly outgrew its space. Two years later it relocated to 151 Vine Street under the guidance of the late Reverend J.O Holmes. This early period laid the groundwork for the church’s future growth.

Reverend Holmes’ tenure marked a period of expansion and spiritual awakening. However his departure led to a period of uncertainty for the congregation. This period of searching for new leadership ended in 1942. The late Reverend T.N Nelson became the church’s pastor. Under his capable leadership Greater Fellowship thrived. In June 1961 the church purchased a building at 11 Randolph Street. Reverend Nelson served for 27 years. He guided the church through a time of significant growth and prosperity.

After Reverend Nelson’s passing the church faced another period of transition. Several pastors served before Reverend G.B Benjamin’s appointment in 1970. He led the church for eleven years. His leadership saw the church pay off its mortgage in 1972. A parking lot was added a year later. This era shows the church’s dedication to growth and its ability to overcome challenges.

The late Reverend Raphael Woods served as pastor for 9 1/2 years beginning in 1981. Then in February 1990 Reverend Stanley A Smith M.Div became pastor. His leadership has been instrumental in the church’s ongoing success. He has overseen many changes including the formation of several new auxiliaries. The church has experienced continued growth and expansion under his tenure. In 2019 the church celebrated paying off its mortgage and 95 years of history. The pandemic brought new challenges. Greater Fellowship adapted by live-streaming services maintaining its connection with its congregation.

The church has faced many challenges. It has always persevered. Greater Fellowship Baptist Church showcases the power of faith in the face of adversity. The story of this church is a testament to the enduring spirit of its members. It’s a story of hope resilience and unwavering devotion to God and community. It is a beacon of faith a place of worship and a vital part of the San Diego community.
